The fraudster sent me an email on October 4th, saying that I needed to renew an automatic payment of $450 and that I should call the number they gave to resolve the matter. I called and was questioned by a man who wanted information on my Wells Fargo bank checking account. He also succeeded in accessing my computer and showing me the amounts on my bank and credit card accounts. He informed me that he had unintentionally deposited $20,000 into my checking account after displaying the balance and activity on my account.
Then he told me that I had to go to my local Wells Fargo branch and send $20,000 to the bank in Hong Kong in order to get it handled. The amount in the bank account at the moment was not nearly twenty thousand dollars. Not only that, but they also took $2,100 from my credit card, totaling $21,500 in theft. I acknowledge that I should have verified my account before sending the wire transfer, but the banker also bears some of the burden. Can I get somehow my money back?
