To evaluate long-term side effects of the levonorgestrel (LNG) and etonogestrel (ENG) intrauterine systems (IUS) within a defined population. A population-based follow-up survey. With the help of a random sample of women in The Netherlands who had a gynecological examination within one year, the women were asked whether they had previously used LNG IUS or ENG IUS, and whether they had had an LNG IUS or ENG IUS inserted since then. Of 2,063 women in the target group, 755 had already used an IUS, of whom 31 had used an IUS in the past, as well as for whom information was available, and 302 were known to have used an LNG IUS or ENG IUS since the study period. Most women used the LNG IUS for 12 months and thereafter removed it themselves. Most women (77.2%) used the LNG IUS for contraception. The user rate after 12 months was 80.5%. Of the women who used an IUS before the study, 2.7% used a combined LNG/ENG IUS. Side effects were reported by 18 women, two or more women reported side effects. Reported side effects were excessive menstrual bleeding, expulsion of the IUS, bleeding with intercourse, and weight gain. A LNG IUS was used by women to treat irregular bleeding and heavy menstrual bleeding. A few of them switched to a combined LNG/ENG IUS or to a combined LNG/EE IUS. LNG and ENG IUS were used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding, and to prevent and treat endometrial hyperplasia. LNG and ENG IUS were used by only one in six women who used a combined LNG/EE IUS.Fiber optic networks are becoming more and more popular for telecommunications.
